World Precision Flying Championships 2009

Poland: report 20th July 2009

Chris Martin and I  arrived in Torun (Poland) on wednesday,we have spent the last four days practicing navigation routes and landings, on Saturday we took part in a mass formation flight over the Old City of Torun marking the opening of the 19th World Precision Flying Championships. Malcolm and Rhona arrived here on Sunday to take up the duties of International judges and Observers, Whilst our own Martin Stevens has been co-ersed to act as Team Manager for the British Team. My current claim to fame was a zero on the first Landing of the first official practice I have to report however that this was short lived. Martin has been doing a great job looking after the team making sure that aircraft are always refueled and aircraft and screens cleaned ready for the next session as well as acting as taxi driver between the Hotel and Airfield, and co-ordinater to ensure that Chris and I are always at the right briefing on time. After the opening ceremony on Sunday there was an air show where the local fire brigade showed there water bombing skills to the crowd.

22nd July Report 2.
All of the official practice is now over, today we have the first of two Navigation routes to be flown with 25 timed check's and allowance of only + or - 2 secs, the heat is on. Then there is also the small question of 25 targets and photo's to be identified and marked on chart as we progress along the route the temp today is about 29c with12 knots wind from the south, my office was about 45c when I climbed in. Once back we are escorted to the de-brief room to have our loggers downloaded and given our timings and penalties !!!  as there are others still to fly we are put into quarantine where Malcolm was in charge of the food, beer, and a watchful eye to make sure that no one mizzled off!
We have our second navigation test tomorrow. After some food and we think well deserved beer or two. Below are some assorted pictures, the hotel is great, food is great, organisation is great.
