Snow What Snow !
No sooner has it fallen and its gone again, in Pembrokeshire anyhow!
January 3rd and a beautiful day for flying not a cloud to be seen and viz looked as if you could see forever. I met Martin, Dave, and Mark up at the airfield we had intended to fly down to Old Sarum as they were holding a vintage aircraft fly-in. With about 2 inches of fresh snow on the runway Martin decided that a Taxi Trial was called for after which he declared all was well and we decided that as weather conditions were near perfect and no snow at our destination we would go.
On arrival at Old Sarum the radio was quite busy fitting in the arrivals, we slotted in on a base leg, after landing I parked up next to a Cessna Stagerwing.
We booked in at the reception and walked into the busy restaurant for lunch, after which we had a stroll around the various aircraft, chatted to a few fellow pilots before booking out for our return journey.
Turning Finals for 09
The weather for the return journey gave us a slight tailwind with the same amazing viz As we approached the Cardiff zone Martin was given a heading towards Porthcawl via Nash Point South while we were vectored out to the middle of the Bristol Channel after hand off from Cardiff we continued on the same heading that took us over Worms Head and through the Caldy Gap before joining on a long right base for 09 at Haverfordwest. I must admit to feeling a little anxious as we turned onto finals, I decided to take the fresh snow to the left of the runway,
Apart from slowing down a little quicker in the snow I need not have worried as the landing was a non event.
It was great to have such great flying weather in January it would have been a shame to waste it.
